Understanding Your Learning Style
Every person learns differently, some are aware of this but some people have no idea that there are different learning styles. The VAK model, an acronym of visual, auditory and kinesthetic was developed by a teacher named Neil Fleming. Most of us have a mixture of these styles but visual is easily the most common and kinesthetic isn’t quite common.
About 65% of the human population have dominantly visual learning styles. Somebody that is mostly a visual learner utilizes their eyes to receive and recall information. Generally a visual learner favors images, graphics as well as other things such as video when learning new things. There are lots of things a visual learner is able to do to take control of their learning style and start learning and studying more effectively. While studying, try to close your eyes and visualize it. During lectures, avoid other visual distractions and make drawings (not doodles) as you take notes. While taking tests, try using visual cues that will help you remember the material. For instance, it’s been found that females constitute a small minority of visual learners. They target auditory measures to peak their interest. If someone informed a woman that scholarships were accessible, it would undoubtedly peak her auditory interest.
Auditory learners make up about 30% of the population. They are better at picking up information while listening or talking. Someone who is an auditory learner usually prefers background music while studying to block out any other noises. Auditory learners will study better and be an even better student when they record class lectures and listen to them again, rather than taking notes. Auditory learners will also benefit by asking questions and participating in class discussions.
Another form of learning is termed kinesthetic learning. Just about 5% of the population learn kinesthetically, which involves physical activities. These people are generally called doers simply because they would rather interact with the information rather than sitting down and listening to a lecture. Kinesthetic learners usually get better grades in sports and physical eduction, chemistry, art and acting. They have high hand-eye coordination and will usually move around to learn things better.
Almost all people have a combination of learning styles, which is why if you are ever making a presentation you have to address all three forms of learning to properly reach and engage your audience. Students need to figure out their learning styles so they can easily learn and remember the information that is being taught.
